The only arctic research lab on the coast of the Arctic Ocean providing solutions to physical and global needs.
The remote arctic environment required special consideration of factors such as drifting snow, extreme temperatures, and permafrost. Our background in design for extreme Alaska conditions was put to good use in solving these technical challenges. This multi-phase campus development has been programmed to house science laboratories, administrative offices, dormitories, a warm storage building, water and wastewater storage facilities, and emergency power generation. It was designed to meet LEED® requirements and incorporates current communications, data, and A/V features.
UMIAQ expedited early completion of the access road, site, and structural foundation design in advance of the complete building design to allow for seasonal opportunity for gravel fill installation and material procurement/shipping.
